Treble hopes on the line

Celtic Scottish Cup winners 2011Who would believe that it’s been almost a month since Rangers went into administration. Since such times, there has been probably hundreds of thousands of words, thoughts and comments written about Rangers and what will or might happen to them.

Originally, I was going to write this piece purely on factual occurrences involving Rangers but really, since going into administration, nothing much has changed.

Two players have left, Mervan Celik and Gregg Wylde. Hardly two top earners or two players who have been setting the heather on fire for their club so is it really a big loss to them? I don’t know or care enough about Rangers to be able to answer that question. Maybe someone reading this can tell me?

Of the two, I saw a headline from Wylde saying that he would never sign for Celtic, with two goals in 38 appearances since 2009, I doubt very much that is something that Neil Lennon will be losing sleep over.

Of course he may end up being an excellent player and good luck to him but I think it’s just a case of a young, ill advised player coming out and saying what the fans what to hear from him.

Over the last few weeks on football phone ins, twitter and most Celtic websites, there hasn’t been very much said or written about Celtic. I feel it’s time to just let whatever is going to happen to Rangers happen and for us to concentrate on ourselves.

In the movie Rocky IV, the character of Ivan Drago says of Apollo Creed “If he dies, he dies” in a manner that indicated he couldn’t care less. My attitude towards Rangers is pretty much like that now.

Yes I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t find some of the funny stuff but I feel we are losing sight of what our own club has achieved in this season.

Some pundits on phone ins have accused us having a bigger hatred of Rangers than we have a like for our own club and unfortunately, it looks like this is the case for some people.

Moving on to last weekend, with 15 players away for midweek internationals, there was never going to be a long time to prepare properly for the game v Aberdeen and with two of the back four making the first team debuts, combined with the recent form of Aberdeen, I feel a draw wasn’t the worst result in the world.

It still keeps our unbeaten run intact. Also, if you are going to draw a match, then we may as well do it when there’s a big gap between us and second place in the league. I’d say that the two debuts were fairly encouraging although I have to express sympathy for Andre Blackman who was booked in what I think was his first ever tackle in Scottish football.

That perhaps kept him quieter than one might expect from a new defender.

As for Mikael Lustig, he hadn’t played any football for a while so to expect him to be fully match fit would have been slightly unfair I think. All in, I feel it was two decent debuts from two players who are going to provide some competition for our already large squad.

Finally, we have the Dundee Utd cup match coming up. It’s been a long time since we had a home match in the cup and when they knocked Rangers out of the previous round, it was obvious, to me anyway, that the random draw would pair us away to Utd.

If we come out of that match with a draw then I won’t be disappointed. Tannadice at any time is a tough place to go but more so when it’s a cup game and perhaps when it will be the best and only chance for some of the Utd players to win a trophy in their careers.

I don’t mean that to sound disrespectful but more realistic. Of course, some of their players will win things but a lot of them may feel this is their best chance.

Any talk of trebles are always nice but as I’ve said all along this year, my only concern really is the league. If we win the league, great. If at the start of the season, someone said you’d be able to win the league cup and Scottish cup but not the league, I don’t think many would have accepted it.

I agree the Rangers story is starting to get old now.. Time to concentrate purely on Parkhead and not the “big house”.

Mainly though, i wanted to make a point about Blackman.. Thought he had a decent enough debut, some nice touches and he appears to have a good bit of pace. But his dive when Vernon(?) walked into him was terrible! Hopefully he’ll soon have that attitude knocked out of him, but i was embarassed to see one of our players hit the deck as quickly (and as keenly) as he did in that situation…
