Emilio Izaguirre Celtic newsHonduras kept their World Cup hopes alive with a 0-0 draw against Canada in Toronto last night.

Emilio Izaguirre played in his fourth international since Celtic collected the SPL trophy as the Hondurans bounced back from their 2-0 home defeat from Panama at the weekend.

With Panama beating Cuba 1-0 at home it looks like Honduras and Canada could be competing for second place with the top two nations moving forward to the final qualifying round.

After winning 1-0 away to Cuba on Friday night the Canadian’s were looking to follow up that win but there were only 16,132 fans inside the BMO Field.

The Canadian’s had the bulk of the chances, with former Celtic trialist Dwayne De Rosario at the heart of most things, but were unable to break down the visitors defence.

“We could not go back home without a point,” Izaguirre admitted afterwards. “Our next two games are going to be very important for our qualification chances. This point is encouraging.

“I was pleased with my own performance, we were more defensive than usual but after losing to Panama we had to tighten up.

“Canada put us under pressure but we defended well, a draw away from home is usually a good result and we’re satisfied.”

Honduras next match is away to Cuba on September 9 with their final match at home to Canada on October 16.

There are three Central and South American qualifying groups with the top two in each group then playing off for three places in Brazil with the fourth placed country facing a play-off with the winners from the Oceania region.

Dwayne De Rosario would have been a fantastic signing. I wish Celtic would have persued the issue harder as he was transfered soon after returning to Toronto and went on to become the MLS MVP. His wages would be very affordable and his work rate, talent and finishing is excellent.
