Victor Wanyama newsNeil Lennon is set to open contract talks with Gary Hooper and Victor Wanyama.

Reaching the group stage of the Champions League has cleared a massive uncertainty hanging over the club.

Beating Helsingborg could bring in close to £20m to the club coffers allowing Lennon start talks with the players that earned the windfall.

There was no big money signings before the transfer deadline closed with £1m spent on Efe Ambrose while Lassad Nouioui, Miku and Lubos Kamenar arrived on loan or as free agents.

“There are three or four we will be looking to give new improved contracts to,” Lennon explained. “Just to reward them for their efforts.

“Victor and Gary Hooper would come into that category.

“We are already talking to Thomas Rogne. It’s ongoing with him, he has a year left on his contract and is a player who has done great for me.

“There are a couple of other ones in the squad who deserve it as well.”

Wanyama and Hooper could more than double their money moving to England- with Celtic profiting handsomely- but Lennon hopes that a pay hike and the lure of big nights in the Champions League can help him retain his squad.

“The value these guys get from being here is the Champions League,” the Celtic boss added. “Without Rangers being here, the carrot is that you come to Celtic to play Champions League football. They are going to do that.

“They are going to experience something that will be very, very special. It’s something that other clubs in the Premier League can’t give them.

“Around 80 per cent of the clubs down there can’t give them Champions League football but thankfully we have been able to provide that this year.”

  • That’s the way to do it Celtic. When we have a good squad keep them and don’t splash the cash on new players who might not fit in glad to see we’re trying to keep this team together for the long term.

One or two might have to be sold to keep us ticking over like Ki but I think we’re doing it right by signing the players on longer contracts.

Well done Peter and Neil you both are playing a blinder hail hail to Scotland’s only global brand.

I am pleased that Celtic appear to be going about their business in the correct and sensible manner. A manner which most clubs outside the mega-rich have to.

Getting these players signed to longer contracts does not guarantee they will stay, but it does guarantee that Celtic will get a good return for them.

The players will also benefit as any club willing to pay the asking price will also be willing to pay them very well indeed.

It is protection against the idiotic money available for EPL clubs.

Always reward success, but we need to keep the players working hard & improving. Long way to go before we are anything like the finished article.

We have a chance of qualifying, especially if we can get things sorted away from home. Hopefully all these injuries start clearing up so we can get a more settled formation.

Like the few set plays we have scored from so far though, shows work is being put in behind the scenes. Always great to see them pay off in match occasions.
