referee Celtic newsScotland’s leading referees are enjoying a four day training camp in La Manga.

Celtic are the only SPL club able to afford to go away to a training camp but 33 of the SFA’s officials are being put through their paces at the Spanish resort.

In recent weeks the performances of Steven McLean and Willie Collum have been heavily criticised with both men now enjoying their break in the sun.

“The winter training camp allows us to take advantage of the Scottish Premier League winter shutdown,” John Fleming, the head of refereeing explained.

“We can go away and put the referees through intense training sessions and monitor their fitness. We can also review where we are in the season to allow us to make improvements and enhance performances going forward.

“We have our category two referees with us again this year as well as our top female referee Morag Pirie. It’s important they are involved to let them know what the demands of being a top referee are and to give them the opportunity to mix with the country’s best referees.

“The camp is now in its sixth year but this is only the second time we have been to La Manga following on from a successful camp last year.

“We have made some adjustments to the programme this year and I’m looking forward to a productive week.”

At the weekend the SFA held a dinner in honour of Scotland’s FIFA recognised referees.

Fleming added: “The dinner provides us with an opportunity to recognise our international officials and present them with their FIFA badge which denotes them from other officials.“

It would be interesting to see a list of who all made it on this jolly off the back of ordinary fans. Why couldn’t they do all of this at home in Scotland?
