Norwich have joined the race to sign Michael McGovern with Alex Neil hoping to be reunited with the star of North of Ireland’s Euro 2016 campaign.

Neil signed the keeper for Hamilton in 2014 after they won promotion to the Premiership kicking off an incredible rise in the former Celtic keeper’s career.

After being released by Celtic in 2008 McGovern failed to make a single top team appearance in a season at Dundee United before finding his feet at Ross County and Falkirk.

Since moving to Hamilton his career has taken off and established him as the first choice international keeper for Michael O’Neill.

Half a dozen English Championship clubs, including Leeds United, Bristol City, Rotherham and Wigan have expressed interest in McGovern after his appearances at Euro 2016 but being reunited with Neil looks like the obvious move for the free agent.

Whatever happens in his career there is little doubt that his display in the 1-0 defeat from Germany put him in the international spotlight.

After that match former Arsenal keeper Jens Lehmann said: “He’s fantastic; he kept them in the game several times.

I’ve heard he’s a free agent now, can he speak German? I might ask a couple of clubs to take him after today’s performance.

“On the highest level, to play like that… I’m wondering why he is a free agent.”

Gaining the ultimate seal of approval for an Irish goalkeeper Pat Jennings said: “It’s too difficult for me to pick one person out, the team is built on the understand that everyone works together for the collective cause.

However as a keeper myself I would have to say that Michael McGovern’s performance against Germany was sensational, he has a big future and I am sure he has had lots of clubs calling since his heroic display in Paris.”
