The mystery of the forgotten Celt deepens

As Celtic prepare for Champions League qualifiers and a Scotland squad is named the mystery of Charlie Mulgrew deepens.

Since being involved in the end of season internationals against Italy and France the 2012 Scottish Player of the Year hasn’t surfaced anywhere.

Surely he’s not destined for the graveyard that is the BBC Scotland Sportscene studio?

Apart from some training with Celtic to retain fitness next to nothing has been heard of.

At 30-years-old he should be in his footballing prime with a decade of experience to call on covering European action, title wins and International experience.

For reasons hard to fathom he remains outside of football without a club.

When the transfer window closes next week he will become more desirable but with all the major leagues up and running a main factor in five Celtic title successes is on the outside looking in.

A deal was offered from Celtic but with Kolo Toure signing and Eoghan O’Connell emerging that door seems to have closed, squad men don’t seem to interest or excite Brendan Rodgers.

At the end of June Mulgrew told The Sun: “It was brilliant to take a call from the new gaffer. I’ve always said I’m happy at Celtic, that I love playing for the club, and that I wanted to get things sorted out.

That hasn’t changed, so it’s great to have Brendan Rodgers tell me directly he wants to keep me.

He texted me late on Tuesday night, and then we had a conversation on Wednesday afternoon which was fantastic.

Nothing has been agreed, we still need to sit around the table and agree a contract. But we had a good chat, and hopefully we can now get things sorted out.”

Two months on nothing has been sorted with Celtic, or elsewhere.
