Six years after leaving Celtic for Spartak Moscow in an £11m deal Aiden McGeady has signed a season long loan deal with Preston North End.

After a promising start to his career at Everton the last 18 months have turned into a nightmare with his career on a downward spiral just as it should have been at it’s peak.

Following Ireland’s international against Serbia on Monday reality kicks in as he reports to Deepdale to prepare for his debut against Barnsley.

A loan move to Preston involves no major upheaval for the former Celtic midfielder who is pleased to get the chance to stabilise and re-establish his career.

I am delighted to sign, it came about pretty quickly,” he told the Preston website. “It was only yesterday (Tuesday) that I heard it might be a possibility and then by this morning I had heard that it wasn’t happening and was off the table.

Then about three or four hours ago I heard that it was back on again, so I was quite excited to get it sorted and I am now looking forward to getting back playing and helping the team.

“I didn’t want the risk of it not happening by going to the game (Ireland v Oman). It is obviously Robbie Keane’s last game, but there is paperwork that has to get signed and I thought I might have to do a medical today.

I was anxious about what might happen, but the manager was fine with me, he understood the situation, so I stayed behind when the team left and got all the paperwork through and sorted it out myself – I could probably be my own agent!”

McGeady still has two seasons left on his Everton contract.
