The deepening Simunovic mystery

The latest Torino chapter to the Jozo Simunovic story adds further mystery to the complex Croatian story.

Twelve months ago Celtic paid anything between £2.5m and £6m to Dinamo Zagreb for the emerging defender to replace Virgil van Dijk.

Over the last few days, after agreeing for the defender to fly out to Italy a deal to take the 22-year-old to Torino mysteriously collapsed.

Predictably the Daily Record was quick to publish ‘reports from Croatia’ that Simunovic had failed a medical, a claim that was incorrect.

While shelling out big time to take Joe Hart from Manchester City on loan it seems that Torino were shifting the goalposts on the terms that had been agreed with Celtic.

By the time the transfer window closed Hart was a Torino player with Simunovic on his way back to Glasgow.

Reflecting on his return from Italy the defender said: “It is no problem for me, this is my job and football is my life.

They (Celtic) don’t need to be worried — I am ready to come back if the clubs don’t make an agreement.

It is no problem for me to come back and help my team. I just want to play football.”

Brendan Rodgers will no doubt move on from the events of the last few days and hope to have Simunovic adding to his 17 Celtic appearances.

It’s not the first transfer to break down on deadline day, it won’t be the last either but until he puts together a solid run of appearances in a Celtic shirt it’s difficult to know what to make of the mysterious defender from Croatia.
