Goodnight Efe, defender faces Siberian treatment

Efe Ambrose can expect the Siberian consequences of turning down two moves away from Celtic yesterday.

Rather than take the opportunity to rebuild his career at Standard Liege or Rotherham the defender has elected to stay put at Celtic despite knowing his first team prospects are almost non existent. He has nine months left on his contract.

Every player has the right to honour his contract- and every club has the right to select whoever they wish for their first team and development side.

Celtic have been very fair with Ambrose, after his own goal against Barcelona Brendan Rodgers praised the defender in public before quietly dropping the 27-year-old from his plans.

At least three deals have to be agreed before a transfer goes through- a fee between the clubs, a new contract at the signing club and a signing off deal at the selling club. Agents also have to be weighed in.

Whatever the reasons for Ambrose still being a Celtic player this morning it’s the player that has to suffer the consequences- while picking up his salary.

The first team door is way out of range now for Ambrose and there seems little point in playing him in the ‘development’ side.

Alongside Dedryck Boyata last week at Kilmarnock Celtic lost three goals but countered that with four of their own.

Jamie McCart is emerging to the fringes of the first team while Wallace Duffy and Josh Kerr wait for the chance to step up.

Neither player might make it at Celtic but equally they could develop rapidly like Eoghan O’Connell when given the chance.

Rodgers has gone on record as saying how impressed he is by the quality of the young players that Celtic have. Ambrose is about to discover just where he rates in Rodgers’ future plans.
