Gary Lineker has thrown a stat back at Lionel Messi’s Champions League critics.

The Argentinian icon scored twice to defeat Celtic last night and continues to push the bar further for his various career records.

Stories of unrest, turning down a contract and the stress of tax issues looked far from his thoughts as he guided Barcelona through to the last 16 of the Champions League.

Lineker knows what is required as a Barcelona striker after spending three seasons in the city after being signed by Terry Venables in 1986.

Since making his debut for Barcelona back in 2004 Messi has scored over 300 goals keeping close to an average of one goal per game.

At the age of 29 he still has three or four years left playing at the top level with his rivalry with Christian Ronaldo pushing both players on to even greater heights.

Last night’s double against Celtic took Messi’s Champions League tally to 92, three behind Ronaldo with both players looking capable of hitting the 100 mark this season.
