Joey Barton faces an FA charge over placing 1,260 bets on football matches over a ten year period.

The former Sevco loudmouth signed a deal to join Burnley earlier this week but will have to sit out a one match suspension after being found guilty of betting on football matches during his brief stint at Rangers.

According to Sky Sports News Barton’s offences were from 2006 to 2016 and almost certain to involve English games.

English football only introduced a complete ban on betting in 2014, before that players were only banned from gambling on league matches within their division or cup ties in competitions that they played in.

If found guilty of the charges Barton could face a lengthy domestic ban which would further lessen his chances of getting into the Burnley side.

The 34-year-old was a member of Burnley’s promotion winning side last season but left for a brief spell at Ibrox where he his two year contract was paid up after a brief suspension.

Barton has until January 5 to answer the charges placed against him.
