Owen Coyle couldn’t believe it when Steven McLean denied Ross County a clear cut penalty against Sevco.

The Dingwall side were trailing 1-0 at half time but put on a spirited show after the break to pin Sevco back into defence.

With 20 minutes left to play and goalkeeper Wes Foderingham taken out of play by a deep cross Ross Draper headed towards goal.

David Bates looked like a rabbit caught in headlights a he swung his right arm to take the pace out of Draper’s header and bundle the ball out for a corner.

Instantly four County players appealed to McLean for a penalty but the FIFA whistler pointed for a corner.

Speaking afterwards to Sky Sports Coyle said: “In the second half I felt that we were the better side and for me that was a stone wall penalty at 1-0.

That would change the complexion of the game. We made a horrible mistake for the second goal and it takes a cruel deflection.

Returning to the penalty he added: “From my position you can tell when four or five of your players appeal right on the spot that they know it was a penalty.

It hits his hand and I would suggest that it’s on target for the goal. Ultimately if you don’t get the decision you don’t get the decision but it’s happened to us too many times.”

Sevco won the match 2-1.

McLean was also involved in the Josh Meekings handball incident in the 2015 Scottish Cup semi-final between Celtic and Ross County.
