Steven Gerrard is ready to knock Sevco back for their managerial vacancy.

The former Liverpool skipper was offered the manager’s job last week but has been reluctant to take make a decision.

This morning on TalkSPORT his former team-mate Danny Murphy revealed that more talks are planned with Gerrard seeking reassurances about the resources he will have.

According to Murphy the Liverpool youth coach wants a budget similar to Brendan Rodgers which is certain to bring negotiations to a halt.

The truth is is that there is nothing definitive,” Murphy told Jim White. “He has had talks, they were positive, there will be more talks this week.

He (Gerrard) is a really ambitious guy, he always has been. He is also very bright and I don’t think that he is going to put himself into a position where he goes into a job where his hands are tied in terms of resources that he has to compete with Brendan.

He, I think is probably seeking some more reassurances. The only thing that I can think is how do you get concrete reassurances for something like that?

I suppose as a football club Rangers can’t try and get somebody like Steven who is young, hungry and ambitious to go there and try and compete- and sell him a dummy.

You have to think that there is some credibility in what they are trying to do but he seemed . He was excited but without what.”

At that point White jumped in to move the subject on Liverpool number two Zeljko Buvac being in dispute with the club.

Later on in the show Murphy added: “I don’t know, and he doesn’t know the size of the war-chest.”

After the excitement and distraction of being linked to Gerrard it seems that reality and the situation that the company is in is taking root.

Whoever takes over at Ibrox needs to get rid of half a dozen big earners, motivate and inspire a dozen journeymen and find the funds to bring in new signings aware of the sort of salaries that Joey Barton, Carlos Pena and Bruno Alves have been able to negotiate.

After that they can compete with a club across the city with three times the turnover that Sevco has.

Dave Murray used to tell Rangers (IL) fans that for every fiver Celtic spend he would spend a tenner. Later on we discovered that Bank of Scotland and HMRC were picking up the tab on that scam.

For whoever replaces Graeme Murty the relatity is that for every pound Sevco raise across the city Rodgers has three times as much to play with.
