Bruno Alves’ move to Parma looks in doubt with the Italian side caught up in match fixing allegations.

The Sevco defender spent a second day in the Italian town but before he could agree a deal the Italian Federation have launched an investigation into claims that Emanuele Calaio contacted two opposing players on Whatsapp looking for them to put in less effort in a crucial promotion clash.

A range of punishments are possible ranging from a points deduction for the 2018/19 season through to demotion.

Sevco are desperate to get rid of Alves’ salary with the former Cagliari defender believed to be the highest earner before Steven Gerrard’s spending spree. No transfer fee will be involved.

The 37-year-old has been given an extended break after being part of Portugal’s World Cup squad although he didn’t get a minute of playing time.

Director of Football Mark Allen is also trying to move on Wes Foderingham, Josh Windass and Alfredo Morelos but has struggled to find any interest in last season’s players.

Gerrard has already admitted that players will have to move on before he can bring in fresh faces.
