Peter Lawwell has praised the new SPFL deal with Sky Sports claiming that it is better than the telly deal completed by the EFL.

Down south Championship clubs are furious with the £595m five year deal with Sky Sports that has just been completed.

No figure has been put on the deal for Scottish football with estimates suggesting that between £30m and £33m has been put into the game.

Significantly the new Scottish deal covers less live matches- 48 rather than 60- while in England there are more matches with the red button deal giving access to all midweek matches played in the Championship.

Scottish fans have been less than impressed by the Sky deal but in an interview with the Daily Record Lawwell claimed that the SPFL has came up with a strong deal.

This latest TV deal might not be ideal when compared to others around Europe but I do believe it represents value for money,” the Celtic chief stated.

For example, if you look at the value per match our new deal is considerably higher per match than the EFL deal. They have sold 300-odd games – every game can be shown down there – whereas there will be a maximum of 48 shown up here.

In that regard, we have achieved value for money in a difficult market place.”

The new Sky Sports deal begins at the start of the 2020/21 season with the fine detail still to emerge.

Currently only four Celtic home matches can be shown live with the bulk of the coverage concentrated on away fixtures.
