Celtic have been linked with a move for Edson Alvarez.

The initial link appears to have been published in Mexico by Record who claim that the 21-year-old Club America defender is being watched by a number of European clubs including Celtic.

With the exception of Javier Hernandez, now at West Ham, Mexican players have failed to make any impact in the UK with Efrain Juarez failing to make any lasting impact at Celtic after a sensational start.

At the weekend Steven Gerrard was bemoaning the massive wages that his club were shelling out to Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera who both have 18 months to run on their contracts.

Alvarez is an attack minded central defender with three seasons of first team football under his belt.

His style of play seems suited to the demands of Brendan Rodgers who is likely to start next season without Filip Benkovic and Dedryck Boyata.

Signing two strikers is the first priority of the January transfer window but medium term Celtic’s central defence is in need of an overhaul.
