Celtic have been linked with a move for Stephen O’Donnell.

The defender has one year left on his Kilmarnock contract with the Ayrshire side unable to get close to the sort of salary offers available elsewhere for a current internationalist.

O’Donnell was released by Celtic in 2011 but picked up his career under Jackie McNamara at Partick Thistle before spending two seasons in England with Luton Town.

Under Steve Clarke his career has been transformed but with a year left on his Rugby Park deal the business decision suggests that Killie need to cash in rather than lose the right back for nothing next summer.

The Sun reports:

Killie tabled a new deal earlier in the season, but no agreement was struck and they now fear losing him for nothing next year.

With several English Championship clubs monitoring the situation, Killie are prepared to listen to offers. Neil Lennon could also be interested if he is appointed Celtic boss.

The link with Celtic is fairly light but with only Tony Ralston committed to the club for next season a new right-back is a priority.

Jermemy Toljan will return to Dortmund next week while Mikael Lustig’s contract expires next month after he turns out for Sweden on international duty.

During the last 12 months O’Donnell has trained regularly with James Forrest, Callum McGregor, Kieran Tierney and Scott Bain while with Scotland.
