Declan Gallagher has been called into the Scotland squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Russia and San Marino.

Incredibly he is the fifth former Celtic defender to become part of Steve Clarke’s international squad joining David Marshall, Charlie Mulgrew Stephen O’Donnell and Stuart Findlay. Four current Celtic players- Callum McGregor, James Forrest, Ryan Christie and Greg Taylor are also in the squad with Oli Burke, now at Alaves, also included.

Like O’Donnell and Findlay, Gallagher never played a competitive game for Celtic but moved on in 2011 to Clyde after spending a season on loan at Stranraer followed by moves to Dundee and Livingston before switching to Motherwell in the summer.

Controversially in 2015 he was given a three year jail sentence for assault but after being released returned to playing with Livingston who he helped win back-to-back promotions.

Gallagher’s call up doesn’t make it into the top ten football stories in the on-line editions of The Sun and the Daily Record.

The 28-year-old was a regular in the Celtic u-19 side coached by Stevie Frail in 2010 where he was a team-mate of O’Donnell, with Lewis Toshney, Matty Hughes and Kieran Brennan the other defenders at the time.
