Michael Stewart won’t be back on Sportsound tonight despite making a BBC return on Sportscene at the weekend.

Four weeks ago, the former Hearts midfielder appeared on Radio Scotland’s Sportsound show hosted by Kenny MacIntyre as they discussed the aftermath of the transfer window.

Following the show Stewart was suspended by the BBC with fans of almost all clubs using social media to call for his reinstatement, one petition attracted over 18,000 signatures calling for his return. During his absence Neil McCann, Malky Mackay and James McFadden stepped in to join Steven Thompson on the sofa.

Although Stewart is often critical of Celtic it is delivered in a constructed and constructive manner respected by hoops fans even if they don’t always agree with his opinions.

The non-transfer of Alfredo Morelos was brought up with Stewart linking together a number of issues such as the false claim of racist abuse by Celtic fans, an alleged attempt to tamper with his car and an exclusive interview with Sky Sports.

The name of James Traynor was broadcast linking the stories together with presenter MacIntyre going overboard to disassociate the BBC from that claim.

At the start of Sportsound MacIntyre read out an apology to Traynor which focussed on the fact that he wasn’t in the studio to answer the claims. That seemed a strange argument since various other people have been heavily criticised on the programme with out being given an apology. Stewart has been far more critical of Craig Levein than he ever was of Traynor.

Leigh Griffiths has been a regular subject of debate on the show over the last 12 months without any comment from the player or anyone at Celtic being in the studio.

After a four week suspension Stewart returned to Sportscene on Saturday night to discuss the first three Scottish Cup ties. The former Hearts midfielder was a regular on Monday Sportsound but the call hasn’t come through for tonight’s show.

Two weeks ago Gary Caldwell was a guest on Sportsound claiming that ‘Rangers’ have a better 1-11 than Celtic. Since being sacked by Partick Thistle in September Caldwell has had no direct role in football.
