Steven Gerrard will spend today deciding whether he should continue in management.

After being knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Hearts he said that he felt the lowest since he came into the job previously held by Graeme Murty, Pedro Caixinho and Mark Warburton.

Those three men had the honour of taking their brogues to Hampden for a Scottish Cup semi-final but a second defeat of the year at Tynecastle put paid to that dream for the Liverpool legend.

Before yesterday’s match Gerrard decided to drop Alfredo Morelos for breaking club discipline, during the first half he lost Scotty Arfield to injury with Ryan Jack hobbling off during the second period.

Another big match howler from captain James Tavernier created the only goal of the game for Oliver Bozanic with Gerrard racing up the tunnel at the final whistle but refusing to speak to his players when he reached the dressing room.

After the defeat the Ibrox boss told The Sun:

I need to think. The plan was to have a day off tomorrow, but I need to think hard about where we are at as a group.

I need to do some real serious thinking in the next 24-48 hours. I just need to think, I am feeling pain right now because I want to win here.

I am desperate to win here, but looking from the side today I didn’t get the impression that the feeling among my players was the same.

I’m very disappointed. It’s the lowest I felt since I came into the job by a long way. The performance was nowhere near good enough.

In December Gerrard extended his Ibrox contract until 2024.
