Neil Lennon is well aware of the deteriorating social and economic situation as he prepares his side to take on Riga in tonight’s Europa League third round qualifier.

Over the last week the rise in the numbers returning positive tests has risen with the two Governments announcing restrictions to combat the spread.

So far just two SPFL  matches have been played in front of crowds of 300 with Celtic Park still to welcome any fans despite plans going back to July to hold a test match.

Most areas of society, such as hospitality and retail plus sectors such as gyms and cinemas are back with reduced numbers and social distancing but the latest announcements have suggested that fans could be kept out beyond the new year and perhaps for as long as six months.

Covering Lennon’s thoughts on the developing situation, the Daily Record reports:

We need to find some smart solutions for this. This isn’t good for the infrastructure of sport in the UK and the longer it goes on the more difficult it is going to become.

I was looking at some head of associations on Tuesday saying there has to be some sort of compromise because, otherwise, clubs are going to be on the brink of extinction and it’s not just Scotland.

There has to be some sort of dialogue between the FA, the SPFL and the government to find some compromise as we go forward.

It’s very dangerous precipices we’re standing on and Celtic aren’t immune to that. A lot of clubs in Scotland are not immune.

It can’t just be closed door and that’s it. There has to be some kind of middle ground or compromise we can find to make things better. And it’s not just for football, it’s for all sports because some could collapse.

If they are talking six months down the line, that’s no good for anybody really. Whether it be for football or any sport.

There will be no fans at tonight’s match in Riga. On Sunday the Parkhead Forge will be open for business to shoppers from various backgrounds, half a mile away the stands at Celtic Park will be empty as Hibs turn up for a top of the table clash.
