Tam McManus has been taken to task over his highly selective review of John Beaton’s performance in the League Cup Final. It wasn’t the best day in the career of the Bellshill based referee.

For Hibs fans like McManus there were screams for a penalty in the closing stages when Ryan Porteous fell in the box with Carl Starfelt in close attention. Almost certainly there was contact, whether it was enough to cause a fall is another matter.

That decision, or non-decision was typical of Beaton.

From a first half corner it seems incredible that he failed to notice Paul McGinn’s attack on Greg Taylor. The Celtic full-back isn’t normally much of a threat from set-pieces but that didn’t deter McGinn from pushing the former Kilmarnock man over while snapping at his heels.

Later in the half Kyogo Furuhashi was wrongly flagged for offside and pushed over as he prepared to head a cross from Callum McGregor, strangely that incident escaped the attention of McManus and others in the media.

The problem with bias by referees does come unstuck now and then when the ref waves ‘play on’ in expectation of an opposition goal. I’m sure Mr. Beaton will explain such mechanics down the pub.
