Barry Ferguson has defended his players strong-arm tactics against Celtic in the Scottish Cup.

Three Celtic players had to be replaced due to injuries with Stephen Welsh close to joining them following a brutal attack from Conor Sammon.

Giorgos Giakoumakis opened the scoring for Celtic but after the match he highlighted the dangerous style of play from their opponents.

Ange Postecoglou will be counting the cost as he prepares his squad to face Hearts on Wednesday with his midfield options severely limited.

Speaking on the Go Football Show tonight, Ferguson said:

I was disappointed to read that, to be honest. One thing about my players is they are 100% committed. They don’t go out to hurt fellow professionals. I asked them before the game to be aggressive and get in Celtic’s faces to make it uncomfortable for them.

But in terms of asking to go out and hurt players, that’s not in my makeup. If I thought any of my players were up to no good, they wouldn’t be in my team. So I was a bit disappointed to read those comments from Giakoumakis.

Don Robertson was Saturday’s referee, last month he allowed Calum Butcher away with a yellow card for a brutal attack on David Turnbull that the SFA upgraded to red with a three match suspension.

With Callum McGregor and Yosuke Ideguchi both likely to be sidelined for the match against Hearts Postecoglou may have to hand a debut to Matt O’Riley.

  • Tony B says:

He was a ned as a player and is a ned as a manager.

“Get in thur faces” is his playing philosophy and if it helps his resurrected club then so much the better.

Having admitted that he said that to his players, he is therefore responsible for the consequences.

Let’s hope it comes back to bite him hard.

“But in terms of asking to go out and hurt players, that’s not in my makeup.”

Aye right Bawwy. Both you and your ice-cream selling assistant were dirty hacking thugs in your playing days so I have no doubt you told them to be more than aggressive. You are a complete tax-avoiding scumbag.

  • Justshatered says:

Barry is entitled to ask his players to be aggressive and indeed his players or any player for that matter can be aggressive but that is what the referee is there to control.
That is what is lacking: referees willing to enforce the rules.
Giakamoukis never said his players went out to hurt Celtic player but when you adopt aggressive tactics it is a fine line from going too far.
That’s when the referees have consistently avoided making the difficult decisions.

  • Pan says:

We know exactly what you told them Ferguson. Your behaviour is typical of all those sullied with the Ibrox atmosphere. An utter disgrace. Scotland’s shame indeed.

  • JOCK BROONY says:

You fkn lying shitebag Ferguson it’s time these amateurs are removed from this competition.
Maybe they should be made to pay the players wages after these disgusting attacks. Better still criminal assault charges.
