There is some confusion over the reason for Liam Shaw’s first half substitution during Motherwell’s 1-1 draw at St Mirren last night.

The on-loan midfielder was making his second start for The Steelmen when he was replaced by Ross Tierney after 40 minutes.

Motherwell’s Twitter account mentioned a cut and bleeding, after the match Graham Alexander discussed blurred vision.

The Daily Record reports:

Alexander says it wasn’t right for Shaw to play on in Paisley.

Motherwell’s boss said: “I am not sure (how he is). He was complaining about blurred vision.

“I don’t know whether he got poked in the eye or something. I am not sure but it carried on and we didn’t want to take any risks. He seems fine in the changing room and he was in there with the lads. We’ll just need to see how he is.”

Shaw is out of contention for Sunday’s match when Celtic take on Motherwell with the detail from last night bound to be a concern for both clubs.

The midfielder agreed a pre-contract deal to join Celtic last February, by the time his Sheffield Wednesday contract had expired there was a change in management at Celtic.

Despite showing up well in pre-season friendlies Shaw had to wait until December to make his competitive debut as Celtic bowed out of the Europa League with a win over Real Betis.
