The grandson of Frank Connor has thanked the football fans that shared their memories and respect for the former Celtic coach who passed away at the age of 86.

Like another Celtic goalkeeper, Ronnie Simpson, Connor had a remarkable career in the game, never seeking out attention but delivering 100% commitment at every club he was employed by.

After eight first team appearances for Celtic his playing career took him to Ireland where he turned out for Derry City and Portadown.

As a coach he impressed Billy McNeill who brought him to Celtic in 1978 where he worked as reserve coach to a generation that included Charlie Nicholas, Davie Moyes, Danny Crainie, Paul McStay, Packie Bonner and Mark Reid among others.

Management at Berwick Rangers took him away from Celtic before he teamed up with Jock Wallace as assistant manager at Motherwell in 1982.

When Davie Hay took charge of Celtic a year later Connor was appointed by the board as his assistant but left in February 1986 and quickly took over at manager of Raith Rovers, initiating a period of great success for the Fifers.

Liam Brady brought Connor back to Celtic, when the Irishman resigned followed quickly by Joe Jordan, Connor became caretaker manager when unrest with the board among supporters was coming to the fore.

In his brief and unbeaten spell in charge he took Celtic to Ibrox for a memorable win with Brian O’Neil scoring the winning goal before handing the reigns over to Lou Macari.
