Celtic’s interest on Tomoki Iwata suggests that Oliver Abildgaard could be on his way out of the club.

The Danish midfielder has yet to start a match since moving on loan from Rubin Kazan at the end of the summer transfer window. Most loan deals include a recall option when transfer windows open.

Abildgaard has made nine appearances off the bench but hasn’t been named in the matchday squad for the two matches played since the World Cup break ended.

Included in his Daily Mail report about Celtic’s interest in Iwata, Stephen McGowan notes:

Loan midfielder Oliver Abildgaard, meanwhile, has failed to make a significant first-team impact.

The Dane provided another midfield option off the bench while Callum McGregor was injured but the fit again skipper has returned straight back into the side alongside Matt O’Riley and Reo Hatate.

With Aaron Mooy and David Turnbull also in contention Ange Postecoglou has five strong midfield options with Sead Haksabanovic also capable of dropping in to a central role.
