Next Sunday at Hampden the two Glasgow clubs will fight it out for the first trophy of the Scottish season.

The National Stadium will be split in half for tickets which is similar to the media build up where both clubs will be bundled together with all sorts of pundits, experts, past and present players asked for their opinions.

Currently the three domestic trophies reside in Glasgow, Celtic holding two of them with the other at Ibrox which feeds the idea that everything is nip and tick between the two clubs.

Over more than 20 years Celtic have been attracting bigger crowds than anyone else in Glasgow, over the last decade the trophy count has been very one sided with that stat taking root in the digital generation.

Fans no longer wait for Sportscene or Scotsport to watch highlights from matches, You Tube provides a nice bit sized package of five minutes from each match.

Yesterday five SPFL fixtures took place at 3pm, some imaginative fans would have found ways to watch the games live from home but at 11pm on Saturday night the SPFL channels uploaded highlights from the days matches.

Remarkably by 8.30am on Sunday the highlights of the Celtic match had been watched 84,000 times. In the same circumstances only 5,000 views had been made of Micky Beale’s side winning 3-0 away to Livingston.

It is fairly raw data but the gap between the two clubs is in no way marginal, for every one person that watched the Livingston highlights more than 16 watched the goals flying in from Celtic Park.

In the digital age clicks and eyeballs are the benchmark although the Viaplay Cup Final will be decided in the traditional manner of goals scored.

  • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

Not that I fund them in any way – but you won’t hear that in the Scottish media –

On the other hand though if the roles were reverse… those that do choose to read them would never hear the end of it !
