Apparently Brendan Rodgers has it all to prove at Celtic. According to Tom English, the chief fantasy writer at BBC Scotland, funded entirely by the remaining core of people buying the BBC licence. Shameless is one phrase that he uses to describe the newly installed Celtic boss.
With no worthwhile football contacts outside of Gorgie Road, English relies entirely on social media for his views on football which are marginally less accurate than his ability to report on his first love of egg chasing.
A certain message-board with media accreditation to Ibrox is the go-to source for English as he forms his views on the next mishap waiting for Celtic. 17 of the last 21 domestic trophies have been tied in green and white ribbons.
One of the great myths that old media is hanging onto is that there is a sizeable element of the Celtic support that is openly hostile to the appointment of Brendan Rodgers as Celtic boss. Deeply divided they call it.
There is certainly a number expressing themselves on social media but most fans are well on the road back from February 2019. That experience wasn’t pleasant but it was exasperated by Peter Lawwell’s decision to give the job to Neil Lennon in the Hampden showers, time has exposed the true villain of the 2018/19 season.
‘Whether it’s a return of the prodigal son or the reappointment of the shameless one, Brendan Rodgers is back.
‘But while Celtic fans knock great fun out of mocking their city rivals, Rangers are stronger now than they ever were during Rodgers’ first stint’ writes @tenglishsport

Following the deletion of a tweet by BBC Scotland’s Chief Sports Writer on 5th March, we have published the following additional information and apology on the BBC’s Clarifications & Corrections page https://t.co/dXEahZ54ZY

The really interesting thing to take from this email, is the collaboration in fabricating a narrative to get a point across.
It’s all staged.“Tom English has said he’ll have a pop at Paul Murray… Scotsman used his comments on the back page with our responses ie. irrelevant.” pic.twitter.com/UQz9KDfDZQ

English’s interest in soccer rarely extends beyond a constant sneering commentary on all things Celtic, best illustrated with his crass tweets following the death of Shane Warne. He won’t miss half a chance to demonstrate his credentials to his BBC paymasters although in the case of the Australian cricketer he went too far, forced into a humiliating apology from his masters in England. Within BBC Scotland he is known affectionately as House Paddy.
Faced with an underwhelming list of candidates most Celtic fans are all-in for the return of Rodgers, it demonstrates that Dermot Desmond is calling the shots rather than delegating and that usually results in success and silverware.
Lazy as ever, English turns to extremists on social media to form his views, painting a picture of hostility awaiting Rodgers when reality is far different.
This time around the former Liverpool boss is inheriting a treble winning squad, young and in the early stages of their careers knowing that a second tilt at the Champions League gives them an opportunity to showcase themselves in the biggest market.
With a highly ambitious manager keen to pick up where he left off (seven out of seven, Tom, seven more than the impressive Mister Beale) with points to prove there is plenty for Celtic players and fans to look forward to.
Assessing what Celtic could achieve isn’t a pleasing prospect for a rugby writer, albeit the second best journalist in his family.
Analysing the detail behind replacing Morelos, Kent, Arfield, Tillman and a Hall of Fame goalkeeper with a clutch of free agents and a non-scoring striker doesn’t make for pleasant reading.
Across the city the guy that saw off Joey Barton, Nico Kranjcar, Filip Senderos, Mark Warburton, Bruno Alves, Carlos Pena, Alfredo Morelos, Borna Barisic, Ryan Kent, Pedro Caixinha, Connor Goldson is back for some more.
It’s a prospect to scare some at BBC Scotland off to concentrate on Glasgow Warriors and produce tedious podcasts with yesterday’s men while waiting on text messages from Tynecastle.
Tom’s on the lamb again. The ibrox club have released half a team with unknown free signings. Aye, they’re stronger than ever.
They’ve signed a bunch of ogres in the hope they could physically dominate an Ange side.— Dr. van Coupon (@DoctorMaeda33) June 19, 2023
This narrative was on sportsound on Saturday coming from Leanne Crichton , no analysis on how Celtic had improved either ,it is what it is we just need to keep winning and celebrate more of they’re tears.

Absolute nonsense from @TEnglishSport
The new Rangers signings may well turn out good over time but they have done absolutely nothing to prove they are stronger.
Any self respecting journalist would be embarrassed by this. But Tom has form for writing on demand for them.

It was anything but a “lapse”. The fact your Chief Sports writer hasn’t given his own apology says it all. Even his tweet saying he had to delete it was only because the BBC told him to. ?

What kind of soup will the ole House Paddy be slurping in this weather?
Gazpacho maybe?
I mean what he says makes no sense. You get rid of players, who were apparently worth millions last year, for nothing, and you replace them with rejects, journeymen that no one wants and free transfers, and that makes you stronger ???
FFS. What’s wrong with these peepul?
Time and time again the snideness towards Celtic just rips out of him
For those out there who are of the opinion the Rangers have ‘caught up ‘ with Celtic because of the early free transfer activity from Beale , then you have to remove those super de luxe blackout welder’s goggles and earplugs ! Reports that Brendan Rodgers will have a £30 million budget in which to improve the squad by leaps and bounds puts paid to any equality notions between the two Glasgow outfits ….. I’m trying to imagine in my mind the glorious , salubrious headlines in every Scottish tabloid rag if the Rangers had a £30 million budget in which to improve its squad ? Jackson , MC Gowan and the like would all be promoted …. that’s a cinch … oops !
“Rodgers Will Have A £30 Million Budget”
Aye Right!
If you think Rodgers is sitting on £30 million to spend as he sees fit, then you don’t know Dermot Desmond. And you have completely misjudged the current situation!
I do not bother with what Tom English says or thinks the same as big Shug nor Charlie boy they are all the same think they know everything ,if some fans are annoyed about Brendan,s return get over it and support the team ,after all its the club that comes first
Strange thing about the Stab City Soup Taker is when he is on the OTB podcast from the Republic of Ireland he praised Celtic. No seriously he did. Told the truth about the SPL saying there are 10 teams pretty similar in terms of players and fanbase. Then well ahead of them are Sevco, although he called them Rangers, and light years ahead of Sevco are Celtic. If he spoke like that on BBC Sevco he’d be sacked. BBC Sevco Pravda for the People. Close the dump down.
