I’m not having the girlfriend excuse- Chris Sutton on Celtic’s strangest transfer

Three weeks on and Chris Sutton can’t believe that Celtic sold Carl Starfelt.

Halfway through a four year contract the defender was sold to Celta Vigo for roughly the same £4.5m that the hoops had paid Rubin Kazan for the Swede.

Without anyone going on the record the move was believed to be driven by Starfelt wanting to be closer to his partner Jacynta who had left Celtic for Sporting Lisbon earlier in the summer.

That criteria met with approval from most but on pure football grounds Sutton can’t believe that his old club took on such a high risk move.

In the Daily Record the former Celtic striker explained:

Carl Starfelt was an experienced campaigner. I still can’t get my head around the decision to sell Starfelt before the end of the window. Carter-Vickers was coming back after a long injury and could have been eased in.

If everything was rosy on August 31 they could have then let him go. I’m not having the girlfriend excuse. He is a professional footballer who was under contract. He should only go on the club’s terms. The Nawrocki signing probably changed the thinking and I know Celtic’s model but you can’t be talking about improvement in the Champions League and then replacing internationals with rookies.

Next Sunday at Ibrox Sutton will be ringside for the Glasgow Derby as a makeshift Celtic defence are put in the firing line for their biggest domestic test.

With Carter-Vickers and Nawrocki out injured there is speculation that Celtic are looking to bring in an experienced defender, possibly on loan.

  • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

The Champions League (I’m loathe to call it that as the majority of its competitors certainly ain’t Champions)…

Improving in The Champions League is pie in the sky for Celtic if the truth be told as if we spend ‘the whole lot’ of the kitty the ‘big yins’ just spend more and more and more and I doubt we will even scrape third place any time soon and certainly not this season where I just pray we don’t surpass Sevco as the worst ever team in this rigged tournament…

Playing ‘The Celtic Way’ will in all likelihood see teams score double figures given the ‘rebuild’ and injury crisis, and the only way to avoid being worse than Sevco is to park the bus big time in all six games – which makes me a total hypocrite as I whinge, bitch and moan about SPFL Premier League teams that come to Parkhead and do just that – but needs must I’m afraid in The (so called) Champions League !

It’s a shame starfelt never received the praise he really deserved within the club, from way to many within our support.
It takes 2 to form a formidable partnership at CB, yet most wanted to give all the credit to CCV.
Could this have also been a factor in the decision taken by starfelt, to add to the girlfriend situation, and maybe Rodgers didn’t see starfelt as a 1st choice either?
I think so myself, and can’t really blame starfelt for the decision he decided upon either

  • James White says:

Sutton is spot on, Starfelt could have had the situation explained to him about easing CCV back in.

  • Saulgoodman says:

Rodgers said he watched every celtic game last season , obviously never fancied him much. wasn’t that long ago he was bombscare to some – his replacement was signed then got injured , hardly anyones fault – tho can’t believe he fancies Taylor or abada either but just my opinion

  • Paul Mac says:

HE WENT TO PLAY IN LA LIGA !!!! Is it really hard to understand ? What else would he have to prove here ? He had just won the treble and got an offer from a club in La Liga. He is probably on more money there… gets the chance to play against the Likes of Real Madrid (played them last night .. today he would be playing v St johnstone) Barcelona, Atletico etc . These are the glamour ties that we sell these players (Champions League) so can anyone not actually understand his decision? Better League, More Money and yeah its closer to Jacynta

  • the maister says:

At least you know what you are getting for your money at Celtic. About 3p in the pound!
    Welcome back Mr Lawwell!

  • Robert Downey says:

Chris is 100% correct, I am more worried about the C L . than the league.
I also have a big problem with the transfer window, Ange had it all sewn up before a ball was kicked.
Now we have Rodgers and P L back and it’s gone to pieces. Coincidence?
