The Union Bears have left their club open to sweeping UEFA sanctions following their Tifo display and banner at last night’s match at home to PSV Eindhoven.

The right-wing Ultras group enjoy special privileges and access to Ibrox where they prepared a pre-match display ahead of the Champions League Play Off tie.

Twice in 2019 the Ibrox club were punished by UEFA for the racist activities of their supporters wich resulted in a partial stand closure.

At that time Reuters reported:

Rangers were ordered by UEFA to close a section of their Ibrox Stadium for their next Europa League home match in the group stage due to racist behaviour and sectarian singing by the Scottish club’s fans.

UEFA had ordered a similar closure for Thursday’s qualifying second leg match with Legia Warsaw after Rangers supporters were found guilty of sectarian singing in the previous round against St Joseph’s on July 18.

European soccer’s governing body said the latest punishment was for sectarian chanting in last week’s goalless draw against Legia in the first leg in Poland.

Last night in full view of the television cameras a huge tribute was paid to William Poole, a figure previously unconnected to the history of either Ibrox club.

A little research uncovers the fact that Poole led the anti-immigrant New York street gang the Bowery Boys in Manhattan which had a focus on being anti-Irish and anti-Catholic.

For added impact the slogan NO SURRENDER OR YOU’LL DIE was displayed at the front of the Family Stand.

There was no attempt by stewards to remove that banner when it was displayed, during and after last night’s match there was no comment from the club condemning the banners of hate.

After the 2019 UEFA sanctions the club rolled out the Everyone, Anyone PR gimmick, clearly that strategy hasn’t worked with questions to be answered from UEFA and more extensive sanctions expected, possibly including the full closure of the Family Stand.
