Mark Lawwell’s transfer ability is about to come under greater scrutiny than ever when the January window opens in 11 days time.

Unlike the last two years it seems highly unlikely that any incoming deals will be announced ahead of the transfer window opening. Twelve months ago Alistair Johnston was training with Celtic and made his debut on 2 January 2023 at Ibrox.

Lawwell has now been in charge of three transfer windows of which only Johnston and Oh Hyeon-gyu have made any impact, brought in as replacements for Josip Juranovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Without the cover of Ange Postecoglou, Lawwell Mini presented Brendan Rodgers with seven summer projects with only Luis Palma playing regularly- last season he wouldn’t have got near game time competing with Jota, Liel Abada and Daizen Maeda.

In May 2022 Celtic announced the appointment of the son of their former CEO as Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment alongside the dubious claim:

Mark joins Celtic from his position as Head of CFG Scouting and Recruitment, within City Football Group’s global structure, having spent the last 10 years there.

That seems to be based on Mark’s Linkedin profile where Peter’s boy seems keen to play up his Manchester City role.

According to Celtic’s announcement Mark had worked with Postecoglou throughout his time in charge of Yokohama which started in February 2018. ‘Working with’ could of course mean that he was on the same City Football Group mailing list because there isn’t a single reference anywhere of Mark being involved at Yokohama.

As recently as August 2016 both the Daily Record and The Times (London) reported Peter’s boy as being Scouting Information and Content Manager at Manchester City which seems like a glorified Office Junior or Administration Assistant.

Questioned about Lawwell Mini at the Celtic AGM Michael Nicholson claimed that the appointment was driven through by Postecoglou, no other candidates were considered or interviewed and joked ‘would you argue with Ange’. Which sort of sums up the leadership qualities of Celtic’s £14,000 a week CEO.

Nothing is known about Mark’s football career prior to getting a job at Manchester City, the cynic might suggest that it was returning a favour after Celtic were involved in some transfer business.

He is grossly incapable of this job . He’s got to go .

I try to keep this objective rather than personal in any way. For all I know ML may be a good person, a committed Christian and kind to children and animals, but it’s irrelevant if he isn’t much good at recruiting first-team ready players for Celtic. Indications thus far aren’t too encouraging.

What I do know for certain is that nepotism and cronyism are the enemy of corporate progression, because it means the same ideas and processes just get churned over, with no innovation brought in.

    Serious question:

Has anyone asked PL, Nicholson, or even BR,

“Does Chairman Lawwell have ANY involvement with ANY transfer business?”

As a supposed NED, the answer should be a straightforward “No.”

But, does anyone believe that the overbearing, ex 18 years CEO would really

be hands-off, and content with just a passive, figurehead role?

CFC might be a plaything for DD, but it is still a plc,

and there are conventions to observe?

Avoiding a conflict of interest is an obvious requirement – and for any business.

Getting an on-the-record denial that PL is involved with his son in transfer

decisions might be a good start – and could actually be helpful for both Lawwell’s?

Lawell, Lawell & Rodgers all have to go.
    Results prove that.
