Is Celtic’s Transfer Model Finally Changing? Don’t Be Fooled

For the past few years, Celtic’s recruitment strategy has been remarkably predictable.

Young.

Affordable.

High potential.

Little European experience.

And plenty of resale value.

It was the Mark Lawwell blueprint.

Players between the ages of 19 and 23.

Usually earning under £15,000 per week.

Often available for under £3 million or at a push £5 million.

Many are already capped by their national teams or viewed as future internationals.

The idea itself wasn’t flawed.

When it worked, it worked brilliantly.

The problem was…

It didn’t work often enough.

The Successes… And The Long List Of Misses

Supporters often remember the bargains.

But there have arguably been even more players who simply haven’t reached the level required.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha

Kwon Hyeok-kyu.

Marco Tilio.

Shin Yamada

Luis Palma.

Some showed flashes.

Some never really settled.

Others simply weren’t good enough.

Individually, none of those signings broke the bank.

Collectively, however, they represent millions of pounds spent on players who have done little to improve Celtic in Europe.

That’s the danger of signing almost exclusively for potential.

Flushing money away on punts and projects while glaring needs in the team go ignored.

Potential doesn’t always become quality.

We’re Not Actually Improving

At first glance, this summer feels different.

The names being linked with Celtic certainly suggest a shift in strategy.

On paper, it feels like Celtic are finally targeting players who can improve the first team immediately rather than hoping they become good enough in two or three years.

But here’s the problem.

We’ve seen this before.

Every transfer window begins with ambitious links.

Every summer we’re told Celtic are “working on deals”, “preparing bids” or “leading the race”.

Until those players are standing in a Celtic shirt, nothing has actually changed.

Right now, we’re not improving.

We’re simply being linked with better players.

And there is a huge difference between the two.

The next few weeks will tell us whether this is genuinely a new recruitment model… or just another summer where the rumours are more exciting than the signings themselves.

Have Celtic Finally Learned The European Lesson?

The biggest criticism of Celtic over recent seasons hasn’t been domestic performances.

It’s been European disappointments. Repeatedly. Against smaller but better organised clubs. Clubs with a strategy and ambition, unlike the Scottish champions.

Celtic repeatedly assemble squads capable of winning in Scotland.

Winning in one of the worst leagues in Europe. Look at the results, season on season, of Scottish clubs in Europe.

Embarrassing. Hearts and Hibs have started early this season.

This Celtic squad looks physically and tactically short in the Europe.

Bar season 24/25 when Brendan Rodgers showed a different approach.

Young players need time.

Champions League football rarely gives you any.

Maybe that’s finally dawned on those making the decisions.

Martin O’Neill has already spoken about wanting greater physicality.

More purpose.

More leadership.

You don’t usually find those qualities in 20-year-olds arriving from South Korea, Australia or Japan.

You find them in players who have already experienced elite football and made mistakes.

Nicholson and Co Think They Can Fool The Support

How can any fan have optimism after results of the past?

A 7-0 defeat to Barcelona.

A 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

A 7-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

A 5-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

Those aren’t simply bad nights.

This board will send Martin O’Neill into the Champions League underprepared, and it’s going to be a slaughtering.

The club lie to the fans regarding ambition, they say we’re “world class” in everything we do only to become the Europe’s whipping bhoys on a bi-weekly basis every year.

Acting Like A Champions League Club

Qualifying for the Champions League only to make up the numbers isn’t ambition.

It’s expensive embarrassment.

If this really is a new recruitment strategy, then brilliant.

If not, it’s another summer of “learned lessons” and “we’ll get the players we need next year”
