Derek McInnes was expected to take Ross Grant with him from Tynecastle to Ibrox to take up that specialist role.
When it became clear that Grant would have cultural issues with moving to Ibrox Celtic stepped in with the offer of a job under Martin O’Neill.
With Scott Fry quitting his Ibrox set-piece role at the end of last season a worldwide search for a replacement brought in Ireland from his role as Barrow assistant.
That dream move hasn’t worked out with the search underway for a more suitable set-piece specialist.
Once again The Rangers Review leads the way with breaking news from Ibrox:
Simon Ireland has left his role as Rangers‘ set-piece coach, the Rangers Review understands.
The Rangers Review understands that Ireland hasn’t been in the dugout as part of recent matchday squads stretching back into August, however, and his time at Ibrox has now come to an end.
Funnily enough the ‘Rangers Review’ decided not to mention Ireland being missing from the dug-out in recent matches.
Now on the back of their best result of the season the bad news is released.
Prior to his Ibrox appointment Ireland had been assistant head coach at Barrow. Even the messengers tried to spin taking the Barrow assistant to Ibrox as some sort of scoop.
During his spell at Ibrox the Tribute Act lost out to Jagielonia and Jablonec to drop out of European football altogether.
Last season Russell Martin guided the club to victory in two Champions League qualifiers before being hammered by Club Brugge.
A place in the Europa League resulted in a payment of around £9m directly from UEFA with gate money from four home matches.
