Leading referee walks away

Marco Fortune CelticSteve Conroy has quit refereeing.

The 45-year-old was apparently unhappy at missing out on SPL appointments and contacted the SFA to inform them that he won’t be covering tomorrow’s Third Division fixture between Berwick Rangers and Queens Park.

Conroy is best remembered for his one and only Celtic v Rangers appointment in December 2009. Marco Fortune had a ‘goal’ disallowed for no apparent reason while Kyle Lafferty was only cautioned for a brutal over the ball foul on Andreas Hinkel.

Last season Conroy was given no SPL matches but appeared to be returning to favour this season with some top flight appointments including Celtic’s 3-3 draw at Kilmarnock in October.

In December he caused a storm by awarding Rangers a penalty at Ibrox against Dunfermline- a decision that was overturned by the SFA with Aluko serving a two match ban for diving.

That matched proved to be Conroy’s final SPL appearance with the authorities unwilling to risk too many honest mistakes in high profile matches.

    Really poor referee…and I don’t just mean against us….
Some of his games were dreadful…he won’t be missed.

Great news .Just when ranker’s date with oblivion was starting to get boring .

His move can only improve the Scottish game. If certain others in seats of power followed suit the state of Scottish football would improve even more.

did rankers stop paying him ? 🙂

rankers have stopped paying everyone mc. that’s maybe why they have been allowed to drop so many points this season. 😉

I can see the Daily Record headline tomorrow blaming Celtic for another excellent referee having to call time on his carear……. oh and his life will have been threatened as well.

  • yogI says:

this decision would not have been made,if the club, supporters and all other decent people like paul mcbride Q.C.,DID not fight against the Anti-celtic bias that existed against us.Of course we know it is still polluted with the craft, but they know that we are not tolerating their wee boys network any longer.
