Stephen McKenna Celtic fanStephen McKenna has walked away from his Rangers takeover bid after discovering that he’d need £30m to invest in the new club.

Despite the backing of John Brown for his bid with business partner Allan Stewart-Bulloch the former Celtic fan has pulled out of his ambitious plans to invest in Govan.

And in a u-turn that Sean Connery or Mo Johnston would be proud of the man that paid £15,000 to play alongside his hoops heroes in 2008 announced that he had no club allegiance and had attended the 2008 UEFA Cup Final in Manchester as a Rangers fan just ten days before pulling on the hoops alongside Henrik Larsson, Simon Donnelly, Tom Boyd and Paul Lambert!

Speaking to the Sun the confused property dealer admitted: “Rangers really need £20million to £30million to move forward- that is how bad it is.

“I don’t think we will be making a bid for Rangers as I don’t think £11million would cut it.

“I can’t buy a club with £11million when it needs three times that amount. My business partner and I were only going to come into the deal as shareholders.

“We were not going to run the club but the level of money we can raise, which is substantial, just doesn’t come close to what is needed to safeguard the club’s future.”

Explaining his supporting habits McKenna added: “Half of my friends are Rangers supporters and the other half support Celtic.

“Yes, I have been to more Celtic games than Rangers, but I didn’t go to Seville and I was in Manchester for the UEFA Cup a few years ago with many of my friends.”

“I am a football fan. The bigotry and sectarianism is not my world. I am a businessman. I was only interested in saving what is a Glasgow institution.”

Over the years i’ve met 1 or 2 oddballs like this who say they go to Ibrox & Parkhead, saying they like both!?? “i’m jus a fan of football they say”.

  • Badbhoy McTim says:

Could it not just be that this guy went in witha bogus offer just to get a look at their books and cause further damage by then withdrawing, claiming that they are still in such a hole that even with funding of roughly double what Green has paid for (sorry, loaned to) Rangers Newco FC you still can’t make it work? They seem to be in enough of the brown stuff with no one buying season tickets and half the team about to leave, so this sort of thing could easily blow them out of the water (again!!).

  • Jay says:

Agree Badbhoy! This guy just went in and made the Newco situation look more dismal than anyone even knew! No wonder Green is panicking about the need for season books to be sold!!! I say he’s a genious!!!

With the amount of people who are walking away from club 12 they must be bumping into each other trying to get out the Ibroke door.
