Davie Moyes Celtic newsFormer Celt Davie Moyes is at the centre of speculation that he is about to replace Alex Ferguson as manager of Manchester United.

Last night news spread that Ferguson was about to step down at Old Trafford 26 years after moving south from Aberdeen.

Announcing his decision this morning Ferguson said: “The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time.

“It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so. The quality of this league winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.”

Moyes has kept tight lipped on his future with no sign of a new contract being agreed at Everton where he has been in charge for 11 years.

Like most bosses in England Moyes is close to Ferguson who has taken a keen interest in his career since loaning out a teenage David Beckham to Preston North End in the nineties.

Jose Mourinho has also been linked with replacing Ferguson despite reports that he is set to return to Chelsea as a replacement for Rafa Benitez.

Like Moyes, Ferguson shares a close bond with Mourinho with the two men meeting earlier this season when Real Madrid knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League.

Yesterday afternoon rumours started that Moyes was set to spend a season as assistant to Ferguson at Old Trafford but that later developed into the real belief that a 26 era at Old Trafford was about to end.

Word spread following a golf day between the United players and coaching staff that Sunday’s visit from Swansea could be Ferguson’s last in the Old Trafford dug out.

United finally confirmed that Ferguson was stepping down shortly after 9am this morning with the story quickly switching to who his replacement will be with Moyes and Mourinho the two front runners.

I’m not sure about this. Can’t see it working out out for davie. It will be a poisoned chalice for whoever takes the job.

Maybe his first season will take care of itself, and maybe the next, but in the long run, only time will tell.

As we know money doesn’t always buy success and Fergie’s attitude and morals has obviously played a pivotal role over the years, emulating that will be the hardest thing to do for whomever replaces him – maybe even impossible.

Good luck to Davie if he gets the job HH

  • Jimbo102 says:

This is double edged for me. I would love to see Davie get the job at Utd and I think it would be a very good fit. My worry is that Everton could turn their eyes to Lenny to replace him. Hail hail

A big thank you to sir Alex for everything in your remarkable managerial career , all those fantastic players you have produced , teams you have built ,and really put our great club perched right at the top of the world football pedestal ! Such a sad day for football , I wish you a very very happy retirement !

Jurgen Klopp is alleged to be a frontrunner as well. He has worked wonders with Dortmund getting to the CL Final and winning 2 of the last 3 Bundesliga titles against a strong Bayern side. The Germany media have been speculating about him moving to United already for a week.

  • Big Mike says:

Whoever takes over has to be a big man to take over Fergie’s mantle. Moyes? Possibly.

  • Andybhoy says:

Davie Moyes is surely the only credible candidate if Man U are looking for a manager for the long term. The fact he has managed to keep Everton at the top end of the EPL for ten years on a minuscule budget is no small feat, especially when you consider other managers have blew tens of millions and have still not come close to achieving what he has.

It will be a tough job to follow one of the best managers the game has ever seen but Moyes deserves the chance to manage at the top level, with money to spend and the pull of Man U he could become one of the greats himself.

    All the Best Davie
