At the age of 33 Johnston has a few years in hand over Joe Hart and Schmeichel when they moved to Celtic.
With just over 48 hours left before Celtic register their Europa League squad the Daily Record has reported:
Celtic are in talks with Wolves over a loan for Sam Johnstone.
The Hoops are trying to land the former England international. The 33-year-old was offered to Celtic earlier this month. The champions have since firmed up their interest.
They want an initial loan from the Championship side. They are trying to get a deal ahead of the deadline.
Celtic are also interested in Blackburn Rovers’ keeper Balazs Toth. He is in the final year of his contract but Rovers want £4 million.

Johnstone was restricted to 17 appearances last season as Wolves were relegated from the EPL.
His last activity was at the start of March when in an FA Cup tie against Liverpool.
According to Transfermarkt Johnstone suffered a shoulder injury at the start of April which ruled him out of the Wolves squad.
Should he join Celtic on loan he will be pushing to become first choice, almost certainly he could remain at Wolves with very limited first team opportunities.
Sinisalo seemed to be making himself untouchable as first choice but has been blamed for some for the second half collapse away to LASK.
Every top club has at least two top keepers contending for the first team shirt.
Should Johnstone join up, provided his shoulder injury has cleared it will give O’Neill competition and options in a critical position.
In England the transfer deadline closes at 11pm on Tuesday. Beyond that Johnstone’s options become much more limited.
As well as the UEFA deadline the SFA deadline for transfers is 5pm on Thursday September 3.
Martin O’Neill will be asked on transfer matters at tomorrow’s media conference to preview the match against Aberdeen.
Loan is probably ok at this late stage as the rest of the team apart from up front need strengthened faster and better !
