That was the early morning news from Scott Burns, the transfer specialist at the Daily Record.
A loan deal has been agreed between Celtic and Wolves which will allow the goalkeeper to compete with Vil Sinisalo for the goalkeeper’s place.
Since Kasper Schmeichel’s shoulder issue flared up at the end of February Sinisalo has been the undisputed first choice ‘keeper.
Ross Doohan has been the regular substitute but hasn’t played a competitive match in 15 months.
Now it appears that a former England ‘keeper is about to join up to provide cover and competition.
At 7.22 this morning the Record reported:
Sam Johnstone is expected in Glasgow today to finalise his loan move toCeltic.
The Scottish champions have agreed the outline of a loan deal withWolverhampton Wanderers.
The former England keeper has now been given permission to travel north to complete his switch.
The deal is subject to a medical, but sources close to the deal believe it should be finalised in the next 24 hours.
Johnstone last played in the EPL for Wolves in December. This year he has played three FA Cup ties, during the summer it was reported that he underwent surgery on his shoulder.
That injury should be cleared by now but he will be short on match sharpness.
In pre-season Celtic could have given Johnstone some playing time but the upcoming fixtures don’t offer any ‘soft fixtures’.
Coming soon is a telling eight day run that includes two Glasgow Derbies either side of a Europa League match against Ferencvaros.
With that in mind it looks like Johnstone will be joining as back-up to Sinisalo.
