GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - MAY 10: James Tavernier of Rangers shakes hands with Danny Rohl, Head Coach of Rangers, after being substituted off during the William Hill Premiership match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on May 10, 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images)
James Tavernier made his final ever appearance at Celtic Park yesterday.
Typically it was disappointing.
Back in 2016 a fresh faced former Wigan ace was part of a team that got hammered 5-1 by a Moussa Dembele inspired Celtic.
Yesterday it was only 3-1 with Daizen Maeda the main man as Tavernier left the scene after 59 miserable minutes.
That was just two minutes after he watched Maeda send an overhead kick looping over Jack Butland to send Celtic Park wild with excitement.
Back in season 2016/17 Tavernier’s team finished third behind Celtic and Aberdeen. Fittingly he will leave Scottish football with the Tribute Act again in third place.
Engels in disbelief. Maeda and the fans going mental. Tav dejected. Every part of this is absolutely phenomenal

Less than a month ago everything in Tavernier’s garden was rosy.
A 6-3 win away to Falkirk made Danny Rohl’s side favourites to win the title. A second one for the club captain.
After a jolly to Marbella Tav told the media messengers that his focus was on the title, not securing another £2m a year contract.
Suddenly, two days later it was Birthday Card time as the Hall of Famer announced that this season was his last.
TAVERNIER- THE LOSERS LOSER
Three defeats later and it is farewell to Ibrox on Wednesday night.
Memories of three trophy wins in 11 years will be recalled over the remaining week of his career.
What’s next is unknown. Only afar fetched tale of Spurs swooping has come to light since he announced his departure.
There aren’t many clubs looking for a 34-year-old right-back to take every corner, free-kick, penalty and throw in but who can’t defend.
His Show-reel against Celtic is a classic.
Around 20,000 angry bears are expected for the visit of Hibs. There may be 2,000 left at the final whistle as Tavernier leads the losers on a lap of honour.
Alongside Andy Halliday he will forever hold a central place in the glories of The Banter Years.

There is a still of the overhead kick with Maeda upside down in mid-air connecting with the ball. To the left of the image is Cap’n Disappointed open-mouthed with horror. If Celtic aren’t selling framed prints of that within a month, the commercial manager needs the sack.
