Charlie Mulgrew didn’t hold back with his celebrations at the Tennents Sixes.
A 7-1 defeat to Barry Ferguson’s side on Saturday was a painful lesson for the Celtic side who had Aiden McGeady and Gary Hooper as their star performers.
That result prompted a team bonding exercise on Saturday night.
Mulgrew and his team-mates returned to Braehead on Sunday in determined mode, as fate would have it they faced a rematch with Ferguson’s side in the final.
There was another high scoring thriller, this time there were nine goals shared between the teams with the good guys coming out on top. It is fair to say that Mulgrew was pleased with the outcome.
DELIGHTED MULGREW DOESN’T HOLD BACK
Media darling Andy Halliday was the player closest to Mulgrew at the final whistle, he was ignored.
Mulgrew had his focus fully on the Ibrox dug-out, led by his Go-Radio colleague Ferguson. Assisted by Ian Durrant.
The Celtic players were in a world of their own as they celebrated.
No doubt a few comments were exchanged after losing 7-1 on Saturday.
Ferguson’s squad had relied on ‘youth’ for the tournament with Halliday, Martyn Waghorn and Daniel Candeias all still playing at professional level this year.
Most of the Celtic squad had been retired for at least five years, mostly drawn from the squad that kicked off the second Nine-in-a-row era.
Mulgrew and Hooper scored in the final Derby match against Rangers, a 3-0 home win in May 2012 before Rangers went into liquidation.
That season kicked off a short period of success that included successive Champions League campaigns.
In season 2012/13 Celtic picked up 10 points from their Champions League group which included the epic home win over Barcelona.
Alas those days appear to be long gone.
Celtic have failed to win their last two Champions League Play-Offs, losing out to Kairat Almaty and LASK Linz.
