O’Neill reveals Celtic’s Europa points target with interesting claim on Ferencvaros defeat
Martin O’Neill believes that 10 or 11 points will be needed for Celtic to advance in the Europa League.
Last season Celtic went through to face Stuttgart on 11 points with Brann Bergen reaching the Round of 16 Play Off with just nine points.
Celtic were battling against it from early on in the group stage but a 3-2 win over Utrecht in the final group match secured a place in the Round of 16 Play Off.
Last season’s European campaign was certainly eventful.
From the Champions League exit to Kairat Almaty to a 1-0 win away against Stuttgart as the door closed.
All achieved under three managers, and three changes in management.
O’NEILL ON THE ROAD WITH CELTIC
O’Neill managed Celtic away to Midtjylland, Feyenoord, Bologna and Stuttgart.
Tonight in Lisbon Celtic probably face as tough a task as you get in the Europa League.
Last season Benfica went out of the Champions League at the Round of 16 Play Off to Real Madrid.
They’ve started their Europa League campaign win a win away to AC Milan.
Assessing the task facing Celtic tonight The Sun reports O’Neill saying:
We want to have a go, really have a go. I think we are capable as well. We’re going to try and qualify for the knockout stages for a start.Â
We did that last year and that’s what we’re trying to do. We’ve got another seven games in which to try and get enough points to qualify.Â
I don’t know what would do it.
I’d say 10 or 11 points would qualify. So that would be the ambition for us to do it.
We can still do it. We lost our opening game. You don’t want to lose the game.Â
We could easily have beaten Ferencvaros early on in proceedings.
We’ve got two or three great chances that we should have scored. We didn’t do. Of course, that’s a setback.
The game was a setback during the course of that week. This is a difficult game for us. They’ll be one of the favourites to win the competition.
It is a bit of a stretch to claim that Celtic could have easily beaten Ferencvaros.
Celtic were 3-1 down at home in the 47th minute with the Hungarian side surviving quite comfortable.
There was no surge of pressure as O’Neill made a few changes to the Celtic formation.
Benfica are a clear cut above Ferencvaros with a huge improvement required if Celtic are to take anything home from Portugal.
From Sunday’s squad that won away to Motherwell O’Neill won’t have Jota or Shim Mheuka to call on.
From the UEFA squad Alistair Johnston and Cameron Carter-Vickers are out injured.
Celtic’s Europa League schedule doesn’t get much easier with home matches against Celta Vigo and Beskitas before the November international break.

Sadly I think 4-0 for Benfica tonight – Maybe 4-1 at best !
