Celtic are reported to be among clubs interested in signing Tjark Ernst.
It is quite a stretch to think that Martin O’Neill was ‘keeping tabs’ on Hertha Berlin in last season’s Bundesliga II.
In the absence of any remotely solid transfer news coming out of Celtic a report this afternoon from German publisher WAZ-online, covering Wolfsburg has been ceased on.
Apparently Wolsburg have been linked with Ernst with Celtic thrown in as one of the other clubs chasing the signing.
It seems the most tenuous of links. You’ll get long odds on the 23-year-old German running out at Tolka Park next Tuesday.
Hertha finished last season in seventh place in Bundesliga II. Ernst has a year left on his contract. Everything points to a summer transfer being in everyone’s interest.
TJARK ERNST V VIL SINISALO
Celtic seems an unlikely destination for a goalkeeper a year younger than Vin Sinisalo.
The Finnish keeper joined Celtic two years ago from Aston Villa and has been a very rare example of successful succession planning.
He got a short run in the team in the spring of 2025 when Kasper Schmiechel was initially injured.
More than a few Celtic fans would rather have had Sinisalo playing in the 2025 Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen.
At the end of February 2026 Schmeichel could no longer cover his injured shoulder. Surgery was required. Surgery leading to retirement .
Sinisalo was thrown in to a run that read Stuttgart, Ibrox, Pittodrie, Ibrox. He barely put a foot wrong. He excelled in the Scottish Cup tie at Ibrox,
Commanding the defence, earning the praise of his team-mates after nine months in the wilderness.
Unless a top notch goalkeeper makes himself available Sinisalo will start the season as Celtic’s first choice.
A top notch ‘keeper will cost a decent fee and wages.
Not things that Celtic are known for. Schmeichel and Joe Hart took unconventional routes to Celtic.
